Our Mission

Our commitment to providing a dignified retirement for horses that have devoted their working lives to serving the pleasure of humans is the driving force behind our mission.

Most MSEC school horses over the years have been retired from other pursuits. Some, like Flash and Lily, were former thoroughbred racehorses. Others were retired from performing in “A” shows and eventing. Still others are wonderful animals, like Winkle and Myrtle, whose owners just no longer wanted them.

“We won’t send our retired or chronically injured (but otherwise healthy) horses to the auction and that one-way trip to a Mexican slaughterhouse.” — Bruce Anderson

The result is that many of our four-legged family members are beloved, but non-revenue generating. A couple of years ago, it dawned on us that our real focus here is not making big profits but taking care of unwanted animals. We are literally an Animal Welfare Organization. We explained this to the IRS; they agreed and granted us 501 (c) 3 status.

MSEC/MERA is a quality boarding and training facility operated with the exceptional level of care our boarders and riders have come to expect over the last 16 years. Under our 501 (c) 3 status, at the end of the year we will provide a letter that tells you which portion of the total fees you paid for board and lessons was allocated to the care of our retirees and can be used as a “Charitable Contribution” on your Federal Income Tax return.

We are always on the lookout for unwanted horses that can assist in our lesson program or be re-homed as companion horses. If you own a horse that’s no longer suitable for you or you aren’t able to care for, please drop us a line and we will try to help.

This tax-exempt status comes with other benefits. We can receive tax deductible donations of cash, goods, and services such as equipment, tack and other tangible items. In the coming months, we will establish a volunteer program as well. Please contact us to learn how you can participate.
